Travelling by bus is a cheap thing. You can use the ticket (€1.50 from October to May and €2 from June to September) 2 hours, change and also drive back. But you have to take time. The line passes every 30 to 45 minutes, only the bus from Mgarr toMarsalforn runs each 1.5 hours. A tip of mine: if you are on the line 301 on the way take you from the respective terminus. When the bus is full, the drivers doesn't stop at the stations! This can happen to you even if you take the bus 322 from Marsalforn at the Ramla Bay to port Mgarr. In this case take line 302 to and from Victoria.

I can only go from my experience in Munich, Germany and the major European cities, but the tariffs are considerably more expensive. Here you have fixed rates for trips from taxi rank to destination.
If you land after 10 pm in Malta, you should book a direct transfer at the airport or order at my favorite cabby. At this transfer, a taxi takes you to the ferry port, you get on the ferryboat and on the other side of the canal a second taxi awaits you to bring you to the destination. In winter to May approx. €35, in the high season €50. The buses in Gozo depart only until 11:30 pm.
Rental prices for cars vary on the season. In the summer you should make a booking from home. The rental cars are quickly booked out. Motorcycles in particular are scarce.
